Health information technology professionals are the behind-the-scenes segment of health and medical care. They job is to organize, verify, code, and manage the many medical charts and records that are processed. Heath information technicians are some of the few health professionals who have little or no contact with patients, but spend most of their time in back offices in front of computers or filing systems. In order to become a technician, you should pursue a health information technology degree through health information technology courses and programs.
How to Become a Health Information Technician. Health information technicians entering the labor force usually have an Associate Degree in Health Information Technology from a community or junior college. Most employers prefer to hire Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT), who must pass a written examination offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). To take the examination, a person must graduate from a 2-year associate degree program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) , website www.caahep.org , of the American Medical Association (AMA) . Technicians trained in non-CAAHEP-accredited programs, or on the job, are not eligible to take the examination.
