Medical Transcription Colleges

A medical transcriptionist is someone who listens to dictated recordings made by physicians or other healthcare professionals, and trascribes the recordings into medical reports, correspondence, and other medical administrative materials. A transcriptionist can be trained on the job, or can receive training at any number of medical transcription colleges and programs. Most medical transcriptionist professionals work at hospitals or in offices of physicians, while some work from home. Medical transcriptionists can make anywhere from $10-$20 per hour.

How to Become a Medical Transcriptionist. Employers usually prefer to hire transcriptionists who have completed some training in medical transcription, offered by many vocational schools, community colleges, and distance-learning programs. The schools and training courses will get you on track to complete a 2-year Associate degree or a 1-year certificate program. Again, this is not required to be a medical transcriptionist, but it will help in getting hired and promoted. Upon completion of your medical transcriptionist training, you can take certain certification examinations. The American Association for Medical Transcription (AAMT) , found at www.aamt.org , awards the voluntary designation, Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT), to those who earn passing scores on written and practical examinations. Such certification will give you an instant degree of credibility and competence in the medical industry.
