Sonography University

Sonography, or ultrasonography, is the use of sound waves to generate an image for the assessment and diagnosis of various medical conditions. This technology is most popularly used to monitor fetuses during pregnancy. Sonography technicians are the technicians specifically trained to educate and prepare patients, position and protect them, and make effective sonography analysis.

Different areas of the sonography occupational field are obstetric and gynecologic sonographers, abdominal sonographers, neurosonographers, and ophthalmologic sonographers. A sonography degree can be earned from a quality sonography university or program. A sonography technologist will earn $35,000-$70,000 per year, and will work in hospitals, clinics, or offices of physicians.

How to Become a Sonography Technician. You can obtain medical sonography training in hospitals, vocational-technical institutions, colleges and universities, and the Armed Forces. To obtain formal sonography training, you must take a sonography program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) , website www.caahep.org . You can get an Associate's degree or a Bachelor's degree in sonography within 2-4 years; 2-year associate degree programs are the most common. No State requires licensure in medical sonography, but there are organizations such as the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) that will certify the competency of sonographers through registration. This will help in improving a sonographer's hiring and promotion potential.
