Ultrasound, or ultrasonography, or sonography, is the use of sound waves to generate an image for the assessment and diagnosis of various medical conditions. How to Become an Ultrasonography Technician. You can obtain ultrasonography training in hospitals, vocational-technical institutions, colleges and universities, and the Armed Forces. To obtain formal ultrasound training, you must take an ultrasonography program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) , website www.caahep.org . You can get an Associate's degree or a Bachelor's degree in ultrasonography within 2-4 years; 2-year associate degree programs are the most common. No State requires licensure in ultrasonography, but there are organizations such as the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) that will certify the competency of sonographers through registration. This will help in improving a ultrasonographer's hiring and promotion potential.
